Audi CEO Donald Trump investment, USA News (Perry, Georgia): Germany’s largest union has attacked the chief executive of Audi following an appearance on stage at a rally for President Donald Trump. Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi AG, joined Donald Trump at a presidential rally in Perry, Georgia, to announce a substantial $4 billion (£2.99 billion) investment in the state. The chief executive confirmed that the upcoming site would serve as the brand’s first manufacturing facility in the United States and is projected to create 4,500 jobs.

While the proposed factory still requires approval from parent company Volkswagen, construction is slated to begin next year. The facility is designed to output 200,000 vehicles annually when manufacturing commences in the early 2030s. The Perry factory will focus on developing premium SUVs tailored specifically for the North American market in an effort to bypass heavy tariffs imposed by the US government. Mr Döllner revealed the investment alongside President Trump as the administration works to build support ahead of early November midterms.

Addressing the major financial commitment, the 57-year-old CEO stated: "We have much greater ambitions for Audi in America. The United States is one of the world’s most important premium markets, and we have not yet realised our full potential. We are determined to change that – with premium products, a stronger brand and a competitive local production base. This is about building a stronger Audi business in America – not only about building a factory."

Despite the business objectives, Mr Döllner encountered severe pushback from Germany’s largest union regarding his joint appearance with the Republican President. Christiane Benner, president of IG Metall, representing approximately 2.2 million members across Germany, released a critical statement addressing the event. She stated that the manner in which the executive presented himself and the brand in the United States was highly embarrassing, politically unacceptable, and unworthy of both the company and its workforce.

Ms Benner stated that she unequivocally condemned the presentation, arguing it breached Audi guidelines concerning political neutrality prior to elections. She also questioned the timing of the United States investment while thousands of domestic employees in Germany advocate for job security, emphasizing that IG Metall remains focused on local plant employment prospects.

Concluding her remarks, Ms Benner noted that the controversy would influence future discussions and decisions within governing bodies. She stressed that the Executive Board must establish a clear stance regarding domestic plant futures and reminded observers that the final determination on any new US factory remains subject to review and approval by the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG following a holistic evaluation.
